CONSTRUCTION ALERT
Temporary Building Closure: April 22 – May 13, 2024 (DATES SUBJECT TO CHANGE)
During the closure we will be an active construction site. For everyone’s safety the library building will be temporarily closed to the public when we replace the old, leaking windows and update the computer area.
Thank you for your patience and continued support. All the building improvements are paid for with existing library capital funds.
Building Improvement Projects
Great news! The completion of needed Jericho Library building updates and repairs is nearly here. The library building is over 30 years old with old and leaky windows, and other items in need of updates.
Projects Completed to Date:
- Increased safety by adding a new guardrail and streamlining the center island in the rear parking lot.
- Theater updates including new carpeting, aisle lights, additional safety railings, and comfortable seating.
Projects to be Completed Spring 2024:
- The replacement of old and leaking windows throughout the entire building.
- The expansion of the second-floor computer area with additional seating for patrons.

JERICHO LIBRARY HISTORY
In 1964, after a campaign started by community members to establish a library, Jericho residents overwhelmingly endorsed a public library by voting YES on November 21, 1964.
After acquiring a temporary bank building for the Merry Lane site, doors first opened to the community on February 28, 1966. Then work began and a new permanent building (designed by Bentel & Bentel, Architects/Planners AIA) was officially opened and dedicated on December 10, 1972.
Architectural firm Lee Harris Pomeroy (now LHP Architects, PLLC) was hired in 1983 to design a larger library. A public vote passed the $2.6 million expansion on March 14, 1984, and groundbreaking took place nearly a year later on March 9, 1985. The community dedicated the newly expanded building on November 13, 1988.
In 1996, library planning and design consultants, Aaron Cohen Associates LTD (ACA), were engaged to design spaces within the library to accommodate new technologies and services. Improvements included wiring for voice and data transmission, the addition of an Information Center with public computers and printers, quiet study rooms, and dedicated online catalog (OPAC) stations for the public. The project also included a new spacious Reference area and office, a small alcove to provide office space for Circulation, and updates to Technical Services and Custodial departments.
In 2001, Beatty, Harvey & Associates (now BHC Architects, LLP) was hired to design an updated Children’s Room. New shelving, colorful signage, child-friendly furniture, and a playful mural in the story time area were added.
ADA accommodations for the two main floor bathrooms were successfully completed in 2002.
And now in 2024, with the much needed replacement of old and leaking windows, updating of the theater, and a larger computer area on the second floor to accommodate our patrons, your library continues its mission of service to the Jericho community.

Additional safety railings have finally been installed. The Theater is now complete!
February 15, 2024
We are continuing to follow up on the installation of additional railings in the Theater. There has been a delay in receiving materials. In the meantime, the Theater is operational and patrons are able to enjoy our many performances.
January 13, 2024
All seating and lights have been installed and the Theater is now operational. We are looking forward to our next show, and for our Jericho patrons to enjoy the new comfortable seating.

Carpeting, aisle lighting, and railings are being installed in the theater.
December 7, 2023
Guardrail installation is complete and provides additional safety in the back parking lot. The new and improved island in the center of the parking lot allows for easier access and walk through.
November 22, 2023
The new hardscaping in the front of the building will allow for drainage and eliminate window leaks and holes are being drilled to prepare for theater railing installation.
November 13, 2023
The guardrail is in the process of being installed.
November 3, 2023
The old theater seating and carpet were removed in preparation for electrical work to be done.

We have prepared the front of the building for new windows and hardscaping to eliminate leaks. Shrubbery has been removed and transplanted.
While the Building is Closed...
- Updates regarding the closing and reopening of the library building will be communicated on the library’s phone message (516-935-6790), website (www.jericholibrary.org), email, social media, and with flyers and signs posted at the building.
- Our dedicated staff will continue serving you by phone, through virtual programs and services. Visit our website and click on ‘Live Librarian Chat’ during regular library hours. Access the website 24/7 for eBooks, music, movies, databases, and more. You can even reserve available Print on Demand Museum Passes.
- Jericho Public Library patrons may request books, DVDs, and physical items from other libraries via LILINK (www.lilink.org) and pick them up at the Syosset Public Library, which has graciously offered its assistance to our community during this time. You may also visit other neighboring Nassau libraries to browse and check out items in person. Jericho loan periods will be extended and fines waived until May 20, 2024. A bin will be available at the front of the library property if you wish to return materials before we reopen.
